Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue received an email about a little shih tzu who had been attacked by a coyote or other dogs. His owner got him as a puppy from a breeder in Dallas who promised AKC papers but never sent them. Here is the report from our volunteer who answered the call... |
"After the owner got some things gathered up and she completed the owner release form, we went through their kitchen and on to the porch to see the dog. He looked pitiful. They had a 12" board across where the stairs are so Chewy can't get down on the grass. She did not want him to catch fleas so she would not let him on the grass. She told the story about how they came home one night about 10:30 p.m.and Chewy was gone. She got the flashlight and looked and looked all over her land but did not find him. The next day her next door neighbor told her the dog was at the neighbor's home. She went over and it was Chewy so she took him home and bathed him. She said there was infection on the skin and the vet was afraid the infection would grow on the inside of the stitches if they sewed it shut. He got pain medicine and penicillin for about one week so the last medicine he had was approx. 4-15-04. She said they just did not have the money to take him back to the vet and that they had spent $85.00 on 4-7-04 on him." |
Well I brought him home and carried him to the bathtub to try to get some of the dead scabs and dirt off. When I turned the sprayer on with warm water I could not believe that all his skin and hair and dried blood just started falling off in the tub. I didn't even rub him or even pat him dry. I honestly thought I was killing the dog as he looked like someone had skinned him. Blood was everywhere. I rubbed Neosporin on the skin and the bleeding mostly stopped. He would try to scratch his sides, which were bleeding, with his back feet. The ointment seemed to help. I slept real close to him on the sofa that night to try to keep him from scratching and making it worse. He got up once to go potty. He didn't sleep a lot but at least he wasn't scratching. He looked a lot better Friday morning as the skin had gotten some air and it was soothing over. I got him to the vet before they opened. They were shocked when she saw him. I gave them the latest medical records and told them about the coyote and advised them to do whatever needed to be done to get him well. I didn't know until almost 5:00 p.m. yesterday that FPH had called the vet that saw Chewy in April said there was no coyote involved. He had demodex mange but the owners had refused to have him dipped. |
FPH shampooed him with Betadine shampoo, shaved him as close to the skin as they could and did a skin scrape and then dipped him in Mitaban dip. They gave him Clavamox 125 mg and hydroxyzine hc 25 mg. His heartworm test showed negative. Today they tested his stool and he even has mites in his stool. He looked 100% better today. The fresh air on his skin has even helped him to form scabs from where he was bleeding on Thursday night. He will have to have a new dip every 10 days. They will do a new skin scrape after that and he may have to have 3 or 4 more dips. We won't know until then how much more medicine he will require. |
Our supporters are wonderfully generous and at times, we receive more than we need for the medical expenses of a specific dog. Please indicate in the comments if you would like us to refund your donation if we have already received enough on that specific dog. Otherwise we will apply it to the medical bills of another needy dog. Thank you |
