Cinnamon
Cinnamon July 17, 2005 Update
Cinnamon is a sweet young little white lhasa/poodle mix.
When he came to us, he was very ill and had to be on IV
fluids for several days.  He was anemic and had
heartworms.

We treated the heartworms in April, but he continued to
be very anemic and with no underlying cause.  We originally
suspected ehrlichia and treated for that, unsuccessfully.
We then had to do some very expensive diagnostic tests
and found that he has non-regenerative anemia which
means his bone marrow is not currently generating any new
red blood cells.

One possible explanation would be lukemia.  We did a bone
marrow aspirate and found that he had no cancerous cells
in the marrow, but we did find heartworm microfilaria.
This is a condition that our vet has never heard of.  And, he
is still heartworm positive.

At this time, we are going to retreat the heartworms and
try to put some weight on him.  All of this has meant that
this poor little boy has been hospitalized for weeks and
will continue to be hospitalized so he can be watched by
our vet.  Cinnamon needs $1400 for his expenses to date.

Please help us save Cinnamon by making a donation.

Update 8-5-2005
Cinnamon was touch and go for about a week while we put
him through round two of heartworm treatment.   There
were a couple of days that we weren't sure he was going
to make it.   Remember that he had heartworm
microfilaria in his bone marrow which was causing
non-regenerative anemia.   He was not doing well during
the treatment for a week or so, but is now recovering
nicely.  His blood values are heading up so his marrow is
now making more red blood cells.  Yep, he looks pretty
rough right now, but that's because he's been hospitalized
in ICU for several weeks.

Update 8-17-2005
Cinnamon is recovering now and just today went into a
foster home.  The bad part is that we also just got the
total bill for him and it's $550 more than we though it
would be.  It was a great investment, though.  Without the
amazing skills of our vet, he may never have survived.
Cinnamon's bills totaled around $1950.
