Daisy's Story July 1, 2002 We received an email about a 5-7 year old lhasa who needed to come into rescue. Her elderly owner had died and the children didn't want Daisy. Here's the text of the original email: ----- Original Message ----- From: xxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, July 01, 2002 10:29 PM To: xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Lhasa Apso needs rescue ASAP Linda called me today to ask for help for a 5 - 7 yo female white Lhasa that belonged to a co-worker's grandmother. Grandmother took in the little one from the street and now Grandmother is deceased. Family wants to pts (euthanize) this little one ASAP. "Daisy" has some skin problems but from what was said, has not been taken care of because of Grandmother's failing health. Please contact Kim at xxx-xxx-xxxx if you can help. Time is critical. They will put her down. Thank you very much, xxxxxxxxx When our volunteer, Bekye, first saw this dog, she cried. Daisy is a tiny, eight pound lhasa apso or maltese. She had TERRIBLE skin allergies and had chewed her tail, back and legs into an unrecognizable mess. She has a tumor about the size of a golf ball on her stomach and little warts everywhere. With all of this, Daisy wouldn't stop waging that naked, red rat tail at Bekye. Although we had a ominous feeling that she wouldn't survive, we decided to accept Daisy into our rescue program. Our feeling was that even if we couldn't get her over all of these problems, we would provide her with lots of love and attention. Daisy's tumor We have no idea what this tumor is yet, but it looks horrible. July 21, 2002 We were finally able to get Daisy to Houston to our "ICU" foster home. She's visiting the vet today. We do know that on top of that nasty skin and tumor, SHE HAS HEART WORMS. July 22, 2002 Daisy visited the vet this morning. Her blood work was good, but the chest x-ray showed a significant enlargement of the heart - no murmur, thankfully. Her tumor will be removed this afternoon. Keep your fingers crossed. July 23, 2002 Daisy came home from the vet. Her tumor/hernia has been successfully repaired. We've also shaved as much of her hair off as possible. When dealing with skin problems this severe, we always take off the hair. She's eating like a little pig and seems to be oblivious to all the neglect she's suffered. She is chewing on her legs and tail. We'll have to keep a close watch on those spots - so the skin infection doesn't worsen. Daisy has several more surgeries she'll have to endure. In her condition, our vet just wasn't comfortable keeping her under anesthesia for a long period of time. She'll be spayed next and a couple of the more suspicious skin tumors removed and biopsies. Then the other tumors and warts will be gradually removed as her health allows. She also has heart worms to contend with!! August 1, 2002 Daisy is doing well, considering. Her itchy spots are diminishing and she's perking up. Last Thursday, we had to rush her to emergency surgery because the other side of her stomach had a small tear in it. Now that the first side was repaired and the intestine put back into place, it decided to push through the second side. For a couple of days, she was very lethargic, but now, she's much better. August 3, 2002 Daisy also now has a new best friend, Dali. Dali is recovering from a SEVERE fungal infection. When we first got him, his skin was much more inflamed and itchy than Daisy's. He's just on the verge of beating it. This is Daisy and Dali playing in the Doggie Rec Room. OK, it's Dali trying his best to convince Daisy to play with him. The funny thing is that this is the first time in six months that Dali has EVER tried to play. He must know that little Daisy needs cheering up like he did when he first came. August 15, 2002 Daisy's skin has significantly improved on our "allergy buster" diet. The hair is growing back on the top of her tail and she hardly chews on her legs at all. Most of the red, oozing sores are clearing up. She also has lost about 80% of the sickly, yeasty smell that so often goes along with terrible skin problems. Isn't she cute?? September 21, 2002 Daisy is getting better and better. Other than a small mammary tumor which will have to be removed in the future, we're very happy with her progress. Her hair has begun growing all over her body, except underneath her tail. That's still a trouble spot. May 20, 2003 Daisy has been on good food and supplements for 10 months now. Look at her full, thick coat. Daisy is a sweet, adorable, loving little girl and deserves only the best life. . |
