Shih Tzu Rescue
Faith's Story
In the last week of March, 2004 an amazing
journey took place.  Thanks to the cooperation
between Small Paws Rescue and ourselves,
two  Shih Tzus, in horrible condition, were
rescued from a puppy mill.  Many volunteers
came together and many miles were crossed.
Their journey began in Nebraska and ended
with an airplane ride to Texas.  Only two days
after they arrived, Faith gave birth to two
beautiful puppies.

We named the mom to be Faith.  She was 9 years old - can you believe she
was still being bred!  She was severely malnourished. Her teeth were so
rotted she could not chew the cords as her two adorable puppies were being
born. Two days after the puppies were born we discovered mites, a common
condition in puppy mill dogs.  Faith scratched all the time.  She would scratch
raw spots in her skin, it was very bad.  We would bathe her every other day
to give her relief and she would always look at us with those big beautiful
eyes as if to say thank you.  Through it all she has never gotten upset at
anything we did.   Her determination and dedication to her babies is amazing.

Faith's mouth with teeth rotting
away.  Imagine how painful to have
a mouth in this condition.
Despite the very rough start, good
food, medical attention and love
bring wonderful results.
Because of the horrible condition that these dogs were in, the have had extensive medical care to bring them
to a healthy state.  Here are the issues that Faith & her babies, Sara and Sophie have had to deal with so far.

Faith has had a bladder and kidney infection, lyme disease, sarcoptic mange, huge mammary tumors and
several seerely infected teath.  Bladder and or Kidney Infection

The puppies, Sophie and Sara have had sarcoptic mange, worms and an upper respiratory infection.
Update May 2004 - The puppies have been weaned and so now it is time
to try to help Faith get back to the healthy and pain free life that she
deserves.  She has been having some discharge from her uterus which
probably means that an infection is setting in.  In her weakened
condition, her body is having a difficult time recovering from the birth.
She needs to be spayed & have her teeth cleaned. Just when we thought
things were going to turn the corner for her, MORE BAD NEWS - We
have discovered that Faith has 7 mammary tumors. She will need
extensive surgery.  She will be spayed and have a total mastectomy.
When she recovers from that we will try to fix her teeth.

UPDATE - 5-24-2004
Kristi called and said Faith did real good today.  She was under for
a long time but has come out of it and her vet called a few minutes
ago to let her know Faith was up, her tail was wagging and she was
drinking.  They are going by to see her in the morning before work.
He had to do a complete chain removal of the left side including
lymph nodes and 2 on the right. She's double stitched on the inside
and stapled on the outside.  Now she can walk and they won't chafe
on the ground.  He said it looked real good but he won't have the
results back till tomorrow.  She was spayed and she still needs
dental work and her ears flushed.  We have been working on them
since we got her but they need more than the regular stuff.  We
are very happy that she has this chance and can't thank everyone
enough for seeing that she gets it.

Forever Fosters are dogs that no one wants to adopt.  They
might be seniors and considered too old by most adoptive
families.  Some have terminal medical conditions and
consequently, no one wants to adopt them for that reason.

But we feel that they deserve a loving home despite their
problems.  So these special ones become "Forever Fosters."
This means that they live the remainder of their lives with
their foster family but in the Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa
Apso Rescue "Forever Foster" program.  The foster family
provides a loving home for the little dogs to live out the
remainder of their lives.

But the little dogs need YOUR help with their medical bills.
Each of the "Forever Fosters" needs a sponsor for their
veterinary bills.
