Heaven Ennis
This beautiful little girl was just rescued from a
terrible breeder. She is 9 years old and just
recently had puppies that were taken from her
to be sold off too soon. She has had a life of
pure neglect and no human contact. Her foster
mom says that she does not focus on anything
but looks straight ahead. When we took her to
the vet she was diagnosed with pyrometria an
infection of the uterus. Which had to be
removed immediately. If left untreated she
would have died within days. Luckily we got her
in the nick of time. Once she recovers from
surgery she will be in a foster home learning
what love and care are, for the first time in her
life.
Update 12-5-05: Heaven does not seem to be
getting any better. Our vet thinks that the symptoms
seem to indicate possibly leukemia. She is eating,
drinking and going to the bathroom, but does seem a little
lethargic. Otherwise the only symptoms are very high
white blood count at about 74,000 and an enlarged spleen
making her belly very
dissented. Both Dr. Ruffner, his associates here and
Teresa's vet in Houston, recommend the next step is to
take a bone marrow aspiration
to try and confirm this diagnosis. There are two types of
leukemia, acute and chronic, and both are not as common
in dogs as other cancers. Hopefully, if it is leukemia, it's
chronic which could mean it's much slower to progress
and her chances are greater for living longer.
She will be having the test for leukemia this week.
Update 12-20-06: . Ruffner said Heaven's test
came back negative and after a consult with the
pathologist they don't see any sign of cancer. Her
elevated white cell count is indicitive of an infection,
but they don't know what it is. The best guess is still
possibly a tick borne disease. While they've already
treated her with Doxycyline, they're going to give her a
two weeks worth of the highest dose they can give her.
After that they'll recheck her blood to see what her
white count looks like. If it's still elevated, he said he'd
recommend a sonogram of the abdominal cavity and spleen
to see if they could find anything.
Update 2-20-06: We are still treating Heaven for
Erlichia. She just received more antiobiotics for
Erlichia. Her WBC is coming down, but slowly. It's
arouns 34,000 and normal is around 16-17,000. She's
gaining weight and seems more active and playful all the
time.
Update 3-15-06: just wanted to keep you guys updated
on Heaven. I took her in last Thursday for a re-check.
Her WBC had dropped another 4,000 and is now at
30,000 and her platlette count increased a little (all
good signs). Her weight is maintaining at 14 lbs although
I think she's still a little on the skinny side and will
keep her food increased for a while.
She's taking daily walks which she loves. She walks right
beside me and never tries to run ahead. Her activity
level seems about the same, not as lethargic as
originally, but fairly reserved and quiet.
Please be one of Heaven's angels by helping with
the cost of her medical treatment.
