Justine Smart came into our program
just a few weeks ago.  She is a tiny, tiny, 8
pound ball of love.  She has a heart murmur
AND heartworms.

Our vet checked her blood work and decided
that she was healthy enough for heartworm
treatment, but it had to be the slow, slow
treatment. In this protocol, she is injected
with only 1/2 the amount of immiticide and
then undergoes another injection a month
later, if she's doing well.

The first three weeks after treatment, she
was doing well, then, unfortunately, she
came down with pneumonia.   She has been
hospitalized since last Saturday with IV's.
She is expected to have to stay there at
least a few more days. Her expenses are
mounting and she really needs help paying
for this treatment.

We're expecting her treatment to reach
about $900.  We need to be able to raise
the funds to help this adorable, sweet little
girl.  This includes hospitalization, IV's and
the necessary diagnostics every few days.

UPDATE 02-07-06 Justine is back home
now - OMG her tail is wagging and she's up
and walking around.  Still weak, she's pretty
much over the hump!!  Thanks to all of
you!!!!!!!!!

Justine has been hospitalized for twelve
days now.  Originally diagnosed with
pneumonia, Justine started on IV fluids,
antibiotics and lasix last week.

Although her lungs cleared within a few days
with the lasix, her white cell count
continued to climb.  Last Friday, we decided
to try a different antibiotic, doxycycline.
Over the weekend, she continued on fluids
and antibiotics at the hospital.  Monday, we
were so excited when her blood tests
showed her white blood cell count almost in
normal range.

We will run one more test Wednesday and if it looks good, she can go to her foster home for further
care.  The total is a bit higher than we expected since she stayed in the hospital six days longer than
we originally anticipated.  Her total vet bill is around $1150.

Thanks to the people listed below, we have collected $1025 for Justine's treatment.
