Crossed the Bridge September 23, 2002
A special thanks to Dr. Moore and the staff at Stafford Oaks Veterinary Hospital.
Your head lay gently in my hand As you slowly slipped away A peaceful look fell on your face As you crossed the Bridge that day You fought for life, you strong little girl But life was not to be For fate had dealt a losing hand In your game with humanity Oh, but if someone had only noticed Or cared about your plight Before your battered, broken body Finally gave up the fight You lived your life before me Neglected and abused You never knew a friendly pat Or a loving little coo If only you could have lived with love Instead of pain and isolation Perhaps you would still be here And my heart would not be breaking You probably never saw a vet And your body paid the price But now you're in a better place You've finally won the prize I wish that I had met you Five years before this day Maybe something could have been done To take the pain away I only had your company For one short, wonderful year We worked in vain to right the wrong But your time was just too near I'm glad you let me love you Even though the time was fleeting It was simply fate or luck or God That blessed me with our meeting Now you run and romp and play Among the fragrant flowers In the meadow by the Bridge Where all the rainbows gather I hope you anxiously await The one that loved you most of all The one that held you close that day As your head began to fall Teresa Osborn September 2002
