Requirements for adoption 1. fill out an application 2. provide us with three excellent personal references 3. provide us with your veterinary reference 4. allow us to visit your home and meet your entire family. Our application approval process takes one- two weeks, depending on how quickly you are able to get the reference information to us. If you are only interested in a specific dog and want us to hold it for you while your application is approved, we ask that you pay the adoption fee up front. If, after your application is approved, you determine that the dog isn't the one you really want, we will gladly transfer the adoption fee to another one of our dogs. We do request a donation when you adopt one of our munchkins, and the ENTIRE amount goes directly to our veterinarian to cover medical expenses. And you are more than welcome to donate more. Each dollar we get simply brings us closer to our goal of not allowing shih tzu and lhasa apsos to be euthanized in a shelter. Most of the dogs we get in come from shelters. Therefore, we rarely get in a dog that we would feel comfortable placing in a home with small children. Most of our dogs require a home with children no younger than ten. We are not looking to "get rid" of our dogs. We are looking for the BEST possible home for each and every one of them. Therefore, we do reserve the right to refuse to adopt to anyone for any reason.

Out of Area/State adoptions We do adopt to certain people out of state. We would prefer that you come to pick up your new family member, but understand that under certain circumstances, that just isn't possible. For those that are unable to get to know the dog before the adoption, you can arrange to get the dog shipped to you. We can either use Continental's Quick Pak flight service or a ground service called Pets2Go. Their prices are comparable to flying, but ground transportation is much preferred. Check them out at http://www.pages-yourfavorite.com/pets2go. Of course, if it happens that you don't like the dog or it doesn't get along with your cat or other pets, you are responsible for getting him or her back to us. Therefore, we also ask that you pay a deposit equal to the cost of transporting him or her back. We hold this deposit for six months and if the adoption is successful after that time frame, we return it to you. In addition, we ask that you pay a $50 non-refundable application processing fee. We have to make several long distance telephone calls and this processing fee just helps us to defer these expenses. You can pay this fee via Paypal.
Special Considerations We do not adopt to families with children under ten years of age unless there is already an adult (older than six years old) lhasa or shih tzu in the family. We do not adopt to households with intact pets unless the pet is being shown for conformation or there is a verifiable medical reason that it is not altered. The average life span for a shih tzu can easily be 15-16 years. We try to match the life span of the dog to a family. Understand that we do not want these little guys to be homeless again in just a few years. If you are in a hurry to adopt and just can't wait a few weeks, DO NOT apply with us. Adopting a new family member should involve a well-thought out and deliberate process. We purposely take our time in finding just the right home for our dogs. This is not an impulse "purchase." If you cannot wait, that just give us an indication of the life the dog might lead. We ask for lots of information, including reference statements from at least three good friends/relatives and your veterinarian. If you are not willing to gather this information to help us make a decision, DO NOT apply with us. If you are applying to adopt a very young dog (under three years of age) in most cases, we will require that you have another dog of a similar age. Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apsos like companionship and need a friend with which to play.
