Update 12-13-2003  Thanks to your very generous hearts, we are now able to make arrangements to save
three - four more little dogs from the Missouri mills.  We should be getting them into the Texas foster
parent program sometime mid January.  If any of you have ever wanted to help in a hands-on way, WE NEED
MORE FOSTER HOMES for these little babies.  There are close to 15 more sitting in a mill in central
Missouri waiting for us to liberate them.  With our current foster program, we can only absorb a couple of
these guys every two months.  So, if you've ever thought of fostering, NOW IS THE TIME.  You do have to
go through the same process as an adopter.  APPLY HERE.

Update 12-11-2003  All three gals have had all of their vet work complete now!  NO ONE HAS HEART
WORMS!  This fact is amazing to me given the fact that they came from a puppymill, but YEAH!!  When they
first arrived, we were told that Gidget was pregnant so we had an ultrasound done to determine if that was
true and to confirm the timing.  I'm very happy to report that she was not pregnant - so she was spayed along
with the others and will be available for adoption within a few weeks.  We ran blood work and took a few
x-rays to ensure we would know if they had anything obvious wrong and happily, only one thing showed up.
Gidget had a minor elevation in her glucose levels that we will re-check in a few weeks.  Since they don't have
heart worms, the cost to help these little guys just went into the "reasonable" category.  I'll have an update
on the total vet cost at the end of the week.

Update:  12-5-2003  The little babies have been here for close to a week now.  Two of them are still very,
very shy - Maddie and Patsy.  They will barely let us pet them at all and certainly will not approach us.  Not
even with a lot of coaxing and treats.  Oh well, we have lots of patience.

Update:  6:30 pm 11-30-2003  THEY'RE HERE!!  Look at these cuties.  It's so rewarding to know that
these little guys will no longer be living in tiny wire cages, just cranking out puppies.  They will all soon be
beloved pets, sitting on someone's lap.  They'll be going to the vet this week to get everything done, including
a dental - their teeth are absolutely horrible.   Spent to date:  $1750

Update: 11-30-2003
We organized a transport on Saturday 11-29-2003 from the boarding kennel in Missouri to the new foster
home in Houston.  One of our volunteers drove to McAlister, OK to meet another volunteer coming from
Missouri.  Here was her report after arriving home in Dallas early Sunday morning:  Just got in a few minutes
ago ... Cindy & co. were late getting out of Missouri, the pups they were bidding on went last.  But they felt
good about their day and they had our three girls ... GORGEOUS little Tzus, I might add.  One of the black &
whites is very tiny, but all three are pretty small.  All have wagging tails and want so desperately to play with
my kids.  I LOVE seeing the tails wag ... I had Billy for five months before I could coax his tail up from a
clamped position.  I'm meeting Max in a few hours so I'm going to try to nap a bit ... just wanted you to know
they were here and safe in case you checked email in the early a.m.

Update:11-23-2003
Originally, when we started this urgent initiative, I was trying to raise money to save the little dogs
auctioned off on November 22, 2003.  Once the noon deadline hit, I removed the "donate" button.  Since we
had to decide at that time how many we could get and vet with the money we had, the decision was made at
that time that we could probably handle five dogs.  The buyer thought that the dogs would go for around
$200-$300 so we gave her a budget of $1500.  Unfortunately, the dogs went very, very high, mainly because
of some very well-funded millers that showed up at the auction.  We only got three dogs.  With the money
that was raised, we can easily vet them and board them temporarily, and have a bit left over.
I've been asked by several people, to reintate the "donate" button and keep the Puppymill Refugee Fund
going in anticipation of the next auction.  Please note that this is what we are doing.  Anything donated after
noon on November 22, 2003, will be set aside for the next opportunity we have to liberate a few from the
mills.

Update 3-18-2004
Patsy now goes by the name Angel.  She was adopted by a wonderful family who by the way have now
become an equally wonderful foster family for Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue. Here is what
they  have to say about Angel...

"Angel was adopted on Dec 31, 2003.  She did not know what toys and treats were.  It took about a month
for her to come up to me and when she did I rubbed her ears and she licked my face.    I cried. We take a
step forward and two back.   She stays outside a lot but is slowly spending more time in the room when we
are in the room.  We have "love time" everyday and she runs up and back and finally I catch her and hold
her for a minute.  She loves to run with Cori and the other girls in the backyard and she sleeps all night
with my daughter and Lexi.  (we sold her twin bed and bought a full size bed so that they all fit).  She has
the cutest, funniest personality but it has been real slow to show.  We have a ways to go yet but we will get
there and would not trade her for anything.  She is one of us now and will remain so forever.   It's hard to
describe how special she is."
Update 3-30-2004

I spoke with Gidget's mom today and heard about her new life.  Here are some of the things she told me.
Gidget was adopted on January 8, 2004. She is doing great and it seems like she has been with me
forever.  She sleeps with mom and loves to play with toys.  Even though she has a basket of her own toys,
she likes to go into her grand daughter's play room and borrow some of hers. She told me that Gidget
rules the house and has a great life.  And speaking of the grand daughter who is only 7...read the essay
that she did for a school project

 Grandma and Gidget

My grandma loves dogs and she taught me to love them and to be very gentle with them.  She had a dog
named Mindy but Mindy died because she was very old and sick.  Grandma cried a lot and so did I.  Then
one day Grandma got another dog and her name is Gidget.  She lived at a bad place so these nice people
took her from the bad place and took care of her until they could find her a home.  My grandma adopted
her.  I wanted her to get a puppy but Grandma told me that Gidget needs a good home with somebody to
love her like all dogs should be loved.  Gidget only has one eye but she is still cute and now I love her too.
I am so proud of my grandma for giving Gidget a good home.  So if you know anybody that wants a nice
dog they should adopt one that really needs a home instead of getting a puppy.  Grandma said most
puppies come from puppy mills and that is a very bad place to get a puppy from.  People should get a
grown up dog that has had a bad life
We can not yet write a happy ending for Maddie.  Right now she is still living
and being loved by her foster family.  But like Angel and Gidget, she needs
someone to call her own.  She needs to be the loving and loyal companion
to some very fortunate person.  Could that be you or some one you know?
Check back and hopefully very soon we can write the Happily Ever After
ending to this story.
