Danny's Story
Updated January 27, 2003

GREAT NEWS - we have received donations which cover ALL of Danny's medical bills.  We have, in fact, received so many donations, we're having trouble
keeping up.  We will be getting out thank you notes in the next few weeks.  PLEASE if you made a donation through paypal, please
email us your mailing
address if it wasn't on the paypal record.  Thank you to all of you kind, compassionate people.  There are a few updated pictures of Danny below.

Meet Danny

This is our new little shih tzu/???? mix, Danny.  As you
can see, Danny has a small problem with his back legs.
It seems that Danny's knee joints are basically put on
backwards - they flex the wrong way.  Although he
manages to get around, he doesn't do it well and we
would like to take him to a specialist to see if there's
anything an expert orthopedic surgeon can do for this
adorable little guy.

Danny is only 6-8 weeks old.  He absolutely loves
playing with his adorable mom, Tillie.  Emotionally,
Danny is fine - sweet, playful tiny puppy.

Update
Danny went to an orthopedic specialist today and, GREAT NEWS, his legs can be corrected.  It seems
that Danny either has a congenital problem or his mom was severely malnurished during her pregnancy.
Danny's back femurs(the upper bone in his leg) have grown crooked so that the "ball" on the knee joint
is about 90 degrees pointed in the WRONG direction.    Consequently, he cannot move either knee joint.

The specialist can fix it - they will cut through each of the femurs and re-position them correctly.
This surgery is terribly expensive - normally running more than $3,000 per leg, including tests, x-rays
and the actual surgery.  They are helping us by giving us a substantial discount and the total estimate
for both legs is around $5,000.

PLEASE HELP!!!  This is urgent - the earlier this is corrected, the better off Danny will be.

This is Tillie, Danny's mom.  She
and her baby boy are only alive
because of a wonderful, selfless
shelter walker.

Update
On Thursday, the surgeon worked Danny's right leg.  Thanks to all of you generous people, we were able
to get started on his "recovery" very quickly.

Danny has a large external stabilizer on his right leg now.  But, as you can see in the picture below, the
leg now bends correctly.  Contrast it to the left leg - stiff and without working joints.  That's what
both of his back legs looked like a week ago.

Update:  January 25, 2003

Danny's surgery has been modestly successful.
He has been working with a physical therapist,
Nancy Doyle, at Gulf Coast Veterinary
Specialists in Houston.  This will continue for
another two weeks or so.  He will stil need lots
of physical therapy at home also, once he goes
to his new home.

Danny is also receiving electrical stimulation of
his back leg muscles.  Since they were never
used prior to the surgery, the muscles in the
back of his legs never developed.  After two
sessions with electrical stimulation, Danny's
legs are already stronger and we've been able to
see good muscle contractions.

Update:  12/08/2002
Danny had to have another surgery two weeks ago.  The leg that had already
been operated on had developed a horrible amount of scar tissue in the joints
that had to be removed.  He's still recovering but the leg is looking very good
and he is using it quite a bit.

Although this second round of surgery was terribly expensive, we still have
enough to cover his total surgery thanks to all of you wonderful people.

But, there are still some needy ones.  And, please, please consider donating to
our shelter fund so that we will have an option for the poor little guys in the
pound when our foster homes are full.

Donors/Pledges for Danny's fund

Update October 9, 2002

Cutie boy is doing very well.  He's using the repaired leg,
although he's still walking with it stiff legged, at least he's
using it.  The surgeon instructed me to just make him use it
gently to help the bones knit together correctly.  After we
get the other leg fixed (hopefully in about two-three
weeks) we'll do the same routine for it.  Once both femurs
are strong, we'll start the muscle-focused physical therapy
and teach him how to really run.

Danny is being an excellent trooper.

Poor, little three-month old puppy is stuck in a crate almost
100% of the time.  I can only let him out a few times a day
for a few minutes to go potty.  But, his crate sits on my
table in the den so at least he's busy bugging us all evening.
